Coping, worrying, and temporal thinking in suicide ideation

Abstract:

The Integrated Motivational-Volitional model of suicidal behavior maps the relationship between background factors and trigger events, and the development of suicidal ideation through to suicidal behavior. This study investigates the contribution of a selection of factors from this model on the likelihood that respondents report suicide ideation. 224 participants completed measures on suicide ideation, coping, social problem-solving, worrying and temporal thinking. Results were that between 25.2% and 36.4% of the variance in suicide ideation was explained, with future thinking, worrying and avoidance oriented coping making significant contributions to the likelihood of suicide ideation occurring. Implications of these outcomes are discussed.
